New Users from the University of Michigan

Here is an outline of the procedure to follow to become a user of the LNF:

  1. Contact Sandrine Martin (1239 EECS, 734-763-6719 or sandrine@umich.edu) to discuss your research project and processing plans.
  2. Write a 1 page description of your process and a 1 page description of your overall project.
  3. Complete the LNF Access Form (2 pages).
  4. Complete general/safety training and orientation.
  5. Schedule a meeting with your mentor, yourself, and Sandrine Martin (1239 EECS).

  1. Contact Sandrine Martin (1239 EECS, 734-763-6719 or sandrine@umich.edu) to discuss your project.
  2. Write a 1 page project description. Also prepare a 1 page description of the process that you intend to conduct in the LNF. This summary should allow us to determine if the materials you will be using are compatible with other research being conducted in the LNF and to schedule appropriate training.
    • Include a step-by-step process flow (with a cross section diagram) and all chemicals, materials and tools that you plan to use.
    • If your research deters in any significant way from this description, you will need to gain approval for the changes.
  3. The LNF Access Form PDF is a checklist of things you need to do and signatures you need to obtain and can be filled electronically.
    • Complete page 1 and the User Information section on page 2.
    • Your mentor should be a current LNF user who is familiar with your process, usually from the same research group. If you are the only LNF user in your group, a staff member will be assigned to you as mentor.

  4. Complete general/safety training and orientation
    • Safety training offered online by the Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) department for LNF users. You can view the presentation file PDF and take the online test. It is an open book test, so you may refer to the presentation file as needed.
    • The LNF Laboratory Training Manual available online describes the LNF, safety, chemical handling, and waste disposal procedures. Both the manual PDF and quiz are available online. It is an open book test, so you may refer to the manual as needed.
  5. View LNF orientation videos
  6. View "Social and Ethical Issues in Nanotechnology" video
  7. Print and sign the lab orientation form. Read LNF rules of conduct and policy page
  8. Schedule a meeting with your mentor, yourself, and Sandrine Martin (1239 EECS). Bring the following documents to the meeting:
    • Your process and project summaries,
    • Your LNF access form (filled),
    • the LNF orientation form (signed)
    • Be prepared to answer questions regarding the lab policy documents, safety and rules of conduct.
